Female Sailor uses Gracie Jiu-jitsu to defend herself.

Female US Sailor Triangle Chokes Rapist!
She knocked the knife out of his hand and choked him with her thighs!
An off-duty US navy sailor wrestled a bus driver to the ground and beat him into submission after he attempted to rape her at knife point, a court heard yesterday.
Prosecutors said that she knocked the knife from his hand, broke it in two, bit him in the hand, forced him to the ground and locked him between her thighs.
The woman, 28, was on 24-hour shore leave in Dubai and was attacked as she returned to the port where she was based after a day of shopping.
She had been attempting to hail a taxi after visiting shopping center, Mall of the Emirates, and a supermarket when a bus pulled up next to her. After climbing aboard she became suspicious of the drivers route. She said: ‘I noticed he did not take the main road and when I asked him he told me not to worry.’
He then drove for a further 10 minutes before stopping in an area where other buses were parked and attempted to kiss her.
When she refused him he pulled the knife and threatened to rape her, but she knocked the knife from his hand and was able to subdue him with her thighs. Following the attack, which occurred on January 19 of this year, she left the bus and reported it to her commander at Port Khalid.
The driver, named as K S, from Pakistan, was arrested the next day at his home and the attending police officer said that he was intoxicated at the time. The court ordered that the 21-year-old be examined to establish his age after he did not produce a birth certificate. He has been charged with attempted rape, threatening to kill, assault and consuming alcohol illegally. Having confessed to the alcohol charge, the driver claims to have been too drunk to remember what happened. Traces of the woman’s hair and blood were found on his bus. The case was adjourned to May 1.

WOMEN'S SELF-DEFENSE
|
|
If you are a woman and have never taken a self-defense course or program, then you should. Why? If you were attacked on the street tonight, how would you defend yourself? If you don't have any previous training, odds that you will not be able to defend yourself. No one ever plans to get attacked. These things happen when you least expect them to. It could happen to any woman of any age at any time. It could happen in the day time or at night. It could happen in the privacy of your own home, or out on the street. It could even happen in a public place. It is true that criminals prefer victims who are alone and look weak, but that doesn't mean that they won't attack someone who doesn't fit the stereotype of a victim.
So, you've decided its a good idea to take the next step and take a self-defense course. How do you know where to turn to get the best and most efficient training? Experts agree that if attacked, a woman who is armed with Gracie Jiu-jitsu has the best chance to escape their "would-be" attacker. Why? Because Gracie Jiu-jitsu is the only martial art that effectivelty addresses ground grappling and self-defense. Experts say that it is not only possible but also probable that when a woman is attacked by a man, grappling (close quarter contact) is going to part of the encounter, whether you like it or not. A woman who is armed with Gracie Jiu-jitsu has the tools that she needs to effectivelty defend herself against an aggressor who wants to take her to the ground. Gracie Jiu-jitsu will give you the tools that you need to boost your confidence and give you the skill set to effectively deal with an attacker should the need arise. Arm yourself with Gracie Jiu-jitsu and arm yourself with the best self-defense system known to man. Gracie Jiu-jitsu is so effective because unlike most martial arts that rely on hitting, speed and strength to be effective, Gracie JIu-jitsu relies on timing and leverage. So regardless of ones size or strength, anyone can learn to defend themselves effectively iwth this self-defense form. So, back yourself up with Gracie Jiu-jitsu. What are some warning signs of Bullying?
|
|
So, what are some of the warning signs of bullying that parents should look out for?
1. Unexplained damage to or loss of clothing and other personal items (even if your child "seems" to have a good explanation for it, you should still be aware and check it out further to be sure).
2. Look for evidence of physical abuse such as bruises, or scratches (again even if the child has a good explanation, they may be hiding the truth for fear of retaliation from the bully should they find out they told on them).
3. Loss of friends or change of friends.
4. Reluctance to participate in activities with certain other kids.
5. Loss of interest in favorite activities.
6. Take notice if your child becomes unusually sad, moody, anxious, lonely, or depressed.
7. Take notice if problems develop with eating, sleeping or bed-wetting.
8. If your child complains a lot of headaches, stomach aches, or other physical complaints, this could be an excuse to stay away from places where their bully might reside.
9. Take notice if your child experiences a decline in school achievements.
10. Of course, any talk, or signs of thoughts of suicide should be taken seriously and seek out professional help immediately.
11. Withdrawal from other kids, or activities may be a warning sign that your child is being bullied.
12. Depression, quietness, etc, may also be signs that something is wrong. |

KIDS BJJ!!!!! Do you have a son or a daughter who is between the ages of 4 and 8? Or, do you know of someone who does? Then your child/their child really should check this class out! This class is called BULLYPROOF, and follows the same curriculum that was created by the Gracie Academy out in Torrance, CA. (Ryron, Rener and Rorion Gracie). You may have heard about this course on Oprah as it was recently featured on her show because of the emphasis on bullyproofing children instead of teaching them how to punch or kick another child in order to defend themselves. We do not teach the kids how to punch, kick or even choke another person! We teach them how to physically control a much stronger, aggressive, faster and taller opponent (a bully) should they be attached. But more importantly, we first teach them how to control themselves, how to treat others, how to get along with others and how to problem-solve and resolve conflicts in general. What's more is that we teach them how to do all of this AND stay within the acceptable guidelines of the Zero-tollerance policies found in most school systems today. NO OTHER martial arts program for kids does this! We teach then techniques and strategies to avoid a bully altogether, what to do if a bully start picking on them, and give them measurable steps to take to neutralize the bully and minimize the chance of a situation turning physical in the first place. And if the situation does does turn physical, how to neutralize the bully's physical aggression without punching them back and how to stay safe from punches and kicks as they do so. If your child takes this class you will certainly see their self-confidence and self-esteem grow. And I'm not just talking about a false sense of confidence either, which is the case with most kids martial arts programs as they are mostly for sport these days and teach a child little in the way of effective self-defense. Besides, with today's zero-tollerance policies in place in most school systems, do you really want your child learning how to kick or punch another child? If you have a son or daughter between the ages of 4 and 8 or if you know of someone who does, then you really should give this class (or tell your friends) a try. We promise that you will be glad that you did. Arm your child with "BULLYPROOF" and thereby give them the tools they'll need not only for self-defesne, but tools, skills and other benefits that will help them throughout the rest of their lives.... REAL self-confidence, self-esteem, self-defense coordination, social skills and much more! The things your child will learn from taking "BULLYPROOF" will help them in all areas of their life, for the rest of their lives. Contact us today for more information and to schedule a free trial class for your child. E-mail us at contact@columbiaBJJ.com
Gracie Combatives! Just what is Gracie Combatives and why should anyone care? Don't let the name fool you. This is a very basic/fundamental class where everyone is welcome but especially if you have no martial arts experience whatsoever, then this class is for you! This class/course is designed to take a student with absolutely no knowledge of self-defense and by the end of the course, the students will have the knowledge and skills to confidently and effectively defend themselves against a much larger, stronger, faster oppoonent! Just looking for basic self-defense? Then THIS is the class that you need to take. Gracie Combatives is only composed of 36 lessons. Each lesson is = to 1 class. However, those 36 lessons are repeated for a total of 3 times each which equals 108 classes. The good news is that it does not matter when you start the course. You do NOT have to wait until the course starts over again to join the class because when the course comes to an end, the cycle repeats itself. So, if you signed up lets say in the middle of the course (lets say class # 50), then you would take the course until it ended with class # 108 and THEN you would start all over with the first lesson/class until you come full circle with lesson # 49. So, ANYONE can start at ANYTIME. If you are at all curious about this class/course on self-defense then you should stop by for a free trial sometime this week to try it out. If you know of someone who may benefit from a course like this, then please do them the favor of inviting them to take a free trial class. I guarantee you that ANYONE can do it. The class is certainly not intimidating and in fact, its a lot of fun! However, this course isn't just for the novice. Because of the way the course is designed, ANYONE with or without experience may benefit from this course. If you haven't yet given Gracie Combatives a try, then do yourself a favor and e-mail me at contact@columbiabjj.com today and set up YOUR free trial today!
CARDIO MMA!!! This is Lelin's newest Cardio Kick-boxing class. Come on out ladies for a fun and great workout! NO experience is necessary to take this class. And although the student base for this class is mostly women, men are certainly welcome to come take the class as well. Because of the way the class is set up, ALL fitness levels can benefit from this class because everyone works at his or her own pace on their own bag! If you are already fit, then you just push yourself harder on your own bag to the beat of the music. If you have no experience whatsoever and consider yourself to be out of shape, then NO PROBLEM! You will work on your own bag and get in shape at your own pace. If you lack experience with the technique, then an instructor will work with you to show you and help you to master the basics. In no time at all you will be throwing punches and kicks at the bag like a professional and (at your own pace) get into the best shape of your life! If you're looking to lose weight, get into shape, and/or learn some basic self-defesne then this class is certainly for you! E-mail us today at contact@columbiabjj.com for more information on this class and to set up a free trial class!
BJJ with the gi.... Our most popular class is our BJJ classes with the gi. This class is held on Monday nights and on Wednesday nights from 7:30pm until 9pm. Anyone can come in and try out a free class at anytime. No experience is necessary and if you are a true novice, then an assistant instructor will work with you during your first few weeks of classes to help you learn the basics so that you are more comfortable. Monday nights is beginner BJJ and Wednesday nights is intermediate BJJ. This does NOT mean that beginners can't come on Wed. and it does NOT mean that intermediate students can not come on Monday's. It just means that the focus of the class material is more on the basics on Monday nights with the focus shifting to intermediate BJJ on Wed. I have had many new students with absolutely no experience in any martial art come on Wed. and fit in just fine. Again, if the student has no experience then I will assign an asst. to work with you during the class regardless of whether you come on Monday night or Wednesday night. E-mail us for a free trial class today at contact@columbiabjj.com!
No-Gi Grappling (A.K.A. Submission Wrestling)... This is a No-gi (no uniform) class in which the students wear shorts and t-shirts to the class to train. The techniques that are taught are similar to those seen in both the BJJ classes and our MMA classes. The main difference between No-gi and BJJ classes is the gi.
MMA classes... As made popular on TV's PPV with the UFC, our MMA classes focus of the sport of MMA. This class has everything; kicking, punching, knees, elbows, grappling, etc. Safety is of course our main concern and our highest priority. I can honestly say that we have never had any serious injuries result from this class... not even a single black eye :) The reason is in how we train. The only time there is full contact allowed in this class is when students are striking the bags, focus mitts or thai pads. No full contact is allowed between students during training. I have many first-timers take up this class with a little hesitation at first for fear of getting hurt, but once they try a class they soon realize just how safe the class is and then its all about having fun! So, if you are a MMA fan, UFC fan, etc. OR if you know of someone who is, then you/they really should give this class a try! IF you would like to take a free trial MMA class then e-mail us at contact@columbiabjj.com for more information and to set up your first free trial class!
We will be adding more classes to our schedule in the future. For a complete list of current classes, class times/days and classes to come, please visit our website at www.columbiabjj.com

Self-Defense
|
There are many people out there who are not interested in the sport side of BJJ. They are interested in self-defense. These people aren't interested in spending 10+ years working towards their BJJ black belt. They want to get in and get out.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with this way of thinking. In fact, the majority of people out there in the world today who may be interested in the martial arts are really just looking for self-defense.
People want to know that they can take care of themselves if a real situation occurred. They want to feel confident about defending themselves but of course hope that they never have the need for it.
If this sounds like you, then we have just the class for YOU! Gracie Combatives is the newest class that we have added to our curriculum. This class is taught on Monday nights and beginners and novice alike are certainly welcome. In fact, beginners and novice will make up the core of our student body of this class.
In this class, students wear a t-shirt and gi (uniform) pants. Because of the way that this course is designed, anyone can start at anytime. Once finished, the course repeats immediately. The lessons are already laid out. It takes 108 class days to complete the entire course. You do not have to complete the entire course to get a lot out of it. But, if you do complete the entire course you will have the opportunity to test for your blue belt. The late Helio Gracie once said, "anyone deserves a blue belt who can effectively defend themselves in the street against a larger, stronger or faster attacker."
We keep track of your attendance AND the class date(s) that you attended to make sure that you get all of the 36 lessons (each of the 36 lessons are repeated 3 times which equals 108) before you are eligible to belt test if that is your goal.
This class meets on Monday nights from 8:30pm until 9:30pm and is on our class schedule (see link up at the top). |

Losing Weight
|
Its that time of year again when everyone is motivated to get back into shape as part of their new year's resolution. Problem is that many fail within the first month and even more will fail in the next two months and by April 1st, only the year 'rounders are left in the gym on any kind of regular basis.
This year, don't let that happen to you! In addition to your new year's resolutions you should also try setting monthly resolutions and your monthly resolutions should support your new year's fitness resolutions. In this way, it is very possible to realize your goals of getting, and keeping fit all year long so that you can get out and enjoy your life more.
The other issue is that most workouts get boring after awhile and some are even boring and/or no-fun from the beginning. You need a workout that is fun and will keep your interests all year long. Something that you can truly enjoy and set short, mid and long term goals for.
If you're serious about keeping your fitness new year's resolutions all year long then I recommend that you give our KickBox Fitness class a try. This class is loads of fun, and a great workout! No experience is necessary and anyone can do it!
You won't be sparring anyone so no need to worry about that. Its just you, the bag, your gloves, high-energy upbeat music that'll get you pumped and excited about your workout and a instructor teaching and leading you through the techniques between rounds.
Guaranteed to be a great workout, lots of fun and great calorie burner; a great start to a new you as you work towards your goal of getting and keeping fit all year long! |

How can your child protect themselves from being bullied?
|
So, you have a child that is being bullied at school. Perhaps you aren't even aware that this is going on. Maybe your child is afraid to tell anyone. Or maybe you do know but don't know what to do about it.
This problem is more common than you think and is only getting worse. According to this month's issue of People's magazine, "at least 3 teens tormented by classmates, have taken their own lives in the past month. Why did this happen and how can it be stopped?"
As a result of the increased violence that was seen in schoools in the late 1990's, many schools began adopting "Zero Tollerance Policies" (or ZTP's). At first the ZTP's were mainly focused on drugs and weapons but later extended to physical violence (such as fighting) as well. Today almost all school systems across the US have a ZTP in place. The result has been a decrease in violence in schools, but an increase in bullying. Its easy to implement ZTP's on physical violence because it is physical and the results are easily spotted. However, bullying is more of a mental game that is much harder for teacher's to detect. While ZTP's have cured some problems they have at the same time unintentionally created new ones that kids of all ages must face.
Technology is also to blame for increased bullying on and off school grounds. Today more than ever kids everywhere are becoming victims of "cyber-bullying". Kids are now using their cell phones as well as their computers (the internet) to send mean and nasty txt. msg. and e-mails to their victims. This new method of bullying is even harder for teachers and parents to detect and extends well beyond the school grounds and into kids homes.
Some experts suggest that this new method bullying is even more damaging to the child than fighting. Traditional bullying as well as cyber-bullying can lead to loss of self-esteem, low self-confidence, and self-worth and anger. This negativity can further effect the child in all other areas of his or her life. Bully's also use cyber-bullying to embarrass, and in some cases, blackmail other kids through use of photo's, etc. over the internet. A child's reputation at school can be permanently damaged in the eyes of his or her peers through some of these horrible acts.
What's worse is that most victim's are afraid to tell anyone for fear that it will only get worse. In some cases where parents have found out, kids have begged their parents not to do anything about it for fear that the bullying will only increase.
Bully's have always been around and probably always will be. kids have and are dying as a result of this. The question is what can YOU do as a parent to help prevent your child from becoming a victim?
At ColumbiaBJJ we are committed to doing our part to help prevent children from becoming victim's of bullying. We will teach your child how to stand up for themselves, how to resolve conflict through other means besides fighting, how to tell someone with the confidence that it will not lead to further problems for them from their nemesis. We will help them build their confidence and self-esteem. We will teach them non-violent self-defense techniques that they can use to "neutralize" (not hurt) a bully using the 3 "T"-steps. They will not only learn physical techniques but verbal ones as well. We will arm them with the ability to confidently stand up for themselves and stop the bully in his tracks.
What's more is that your child will learn about "stranger-danger tips". They'll learn about internet safety, latch-key kid safety, and "street smarts". We'll teach you as the parent how to work with your child at home to further reinforce what they learn in our school. To ensure that your child doesn't misuse or abuse what he or she has learned, we will teach them about the "5 rules of engagement". We'll teach them about cyber-bullying what they can do to stop it if it happens to them. They'll also learn about "school safety", house rules, internet danger, emergency escapes and drug defense.
If you want to protect your child from bullying, then bring them in for a free trial class today and we'll show you how we can make your child "bullyproof".
